The MTHS Project Team

Project TEAM (Teachers Enhancing Achievement through Motivation) was initially created as a teacher-student mentoring program designed to promote success for at risk students by fostering a structured relationship between a student and a concerned faculty member. However, in the past few years, it has evolved to include all students who would like to be part of a social, service- based club. Any student who would benefit from mentoring is recommended for membership by faculty, administrators, and counselors. Teachers who participate do so as volunteers. Various activities are held throughout the year for all teachers and students involved. Research shows that students who are successful in school can generally look back and identify a “significant adult” (teacher, counselor, coach, etc.) who made their school life tolerable if not meaningful. Project TEAM aims to provide such a structure.

Initially, mentors and mentees meet to establish goals in an attempt to motivate and recognize improvement in the areas of conduct and/or academics; students and mentors then design individual contracts, which focus on specific areas in need of improvement. Mentors review members’ progress reports and report cards.

Twice a month students are afforded the opportunity to interact with peers and faculty in a safe, drug-free environment. During the holidays, an annual service project is a party and sing-a-long at Court House Convalescent Center. Stockings are stuffed and presented to the senior residents at the event. In addition to our yearly bowling outing, we take students who have participated in service-based activities and/or who have fulfilled their contracts on an educational trip and out to dinner. Project TEAM is funded in part by a grant from the Middle Township Municipal Alliance, which has generously contributed since 2003.
