General English IV


This course is designed to instruct and reinforce the life-long language skills which are essential for understanding and communicating the English language. It continues to broaden students' reading experience with various literary genres including poetry, short story, essay and drama with an increase in vocabulary development through the study of context meaning. The course provides students with an overview of British literature.

In order to receive credit for this course, the student must be able to perform the following activities at a minimal level of proficiency:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the correct usage of parts of sentence, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation, paragraph development, short composition and vocabulary.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in oral recitation by participating in class discussions, oral presentations, and reading of drama.
  3. Demonstrate vocabulary skills by completing analogies.
  4. Demonstrate competency in the recognition of conflict, plot, characterization, theme, setting, and literary techniques as they apply to the various periods and/or movements in literature.
  5. Read a broad base of British literature and be able to recognize and explain the basic elements of exposition, complication, climax, resolution, and characterization.
  6. Demonstrate speaking skills for a variety of audiences.
  7. Conduct research and produce a paper using standard documentation style.
