Algebra/Geometry I - CP
This course is designed for the college bound student with a passing grade on the grade 8 Proficiency Assessment and a C or better average in 8th grade math. Also, students who are proficient on a practice HSPA and have a C or better average in HSPA Prep 9 may take this course.
The course is a one year course that covers about two-thirds of the Algebra 1 curriculum. Algebra/Geometry 1 is the first year of a three year program. This course is open to any student in grades 9-12 who find themselves too weak in mathematics to take the full Algebra 1 course.
Minimal proficiencies which must be mastered for the student to receive 5 credits for this course are:
- Defining basic terminology in Algebra.
- Defining and graphing sets of numbers.
- Using the properties of real numbers to evaluate and simplify expressions.
- Performing the arithmetic operations on signed numbers and terms with exponents.
- Solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable using one-step and multi-step operations.
- Using and writing formulas to solve equations.
- Performing the arithmetic operations on polynomials and monomials.
- Factoring monomials and polynomials.
- Solving quadratic equations with perfect square discriminants.
- Graphing points and lines on the Cartesian Plane.
- Develop an understanding of statistics and probability and will use them to describe sets of data, model situations, and support appropriate inferences and arguments.
- Apply the concepts and methods of discrete mathematics to model and explore a variety of practical situations.
