Algebra I - CP

This course is required for 9th grade college bound students. The student should have the recommendation of the counselor, a passing grade on the grade 8 Proficiency Assessment or on the HSPA and a B average in the previous math course.

The course is designed to provide a thorough background in the use of variables to solve equations and inequalities. The typical student is expected to have strong arithmetic skills and a good working knowledge of fractions, decimals, and other basic mathematical concepts. Emphasis is placed on using the arithmetic and algebra skills learned to solve various types of verbal problems. Since this course is a building block for further mathematics, care is taken to stress the basic steps in solving various types of equations and the use of checking answers to ensure success.

Minimal proficiencies which must be mastered for the student to receive 5 credits for this course are:

  1. Defining basic terminology in Algebra.
  2. Defining and graphing sets of numbers.
  3. Using the properties of real numbers to evaluate and simplify expressions.
  4. Performing the arithmetic operations on signed numbers and terms with exponents.
  5. Solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable using one-step and multi-step operations.
  6. Using and writing formulas to solve equations.
  7. Performing the arithmetic operations on polynomials and monomials.
  8. Factoring monomials and polynomials.
  9. Solving quadratic equations with perfect square discriminates.
  10. Graphing points and lines on the Cartesian Plane.
  11. Solving systems of linear equations and inequalities in two variables.
  12. Performing the arithmetic operations on rational and radical expressions.
  13. Solving rational and radical equations.
  14. Identifying and simplifying rational and irrational numbers.
  15. Solving verbal problems involving linear, quadratic, and rational equations.
