Consumer Math General


This elective course is designed for 12th grade non-college prep students who have successfully passed the 11th grade HSPA and successful completion of only two years of mathematics. It is offered to those students who still need a third year of math to meet graduation requirements.

The course will provide opportunities for students to apply mathematical skills to real-life situations as a consumer. The student will be engaged in consumer activities that include earning money, personal banking and investments, budget preparation, managing a household, buying and maintaining a car, paying taxes, travel, food, clothes, and preparing for careers. Basic mathematical skills are presented through direct application to everyday situations which help students to become wiser, more informed consumers.

Minimal proficiencies which must be mastered for the student to receive 5 credits for this course are:

  1. To determine net earnings based on different types of payments and deductions.
  2. To apply different mathematical skills to sales and unit pricing.
  3. To apply different mathematical skills needed to buy a home.
  4. To determine housing costs and monthly expenses in order to manage a household effectively.
  5. To demonstrate an understanding of the expenses related to purchasing and maintaining a car.
