ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Purpose

For the purpose of this policy, the term “student activities” includes any co-curricular and extra-curricular activity that meets before or after school hours. A committee of teachers, coaches and administrators developed this policy. The purpose of this policy is to hold our students to a higher standard of education above and beyond NJSIAA regulations. It will be the responsibility of each activity Advisor, Coach or Director to see that their students are meeting the requirements set forth by this policy.

Requirements

  • At the end of each marking period any student who is involved in student activities will have their report card checked for eligibility status by the Advisor, Coach or Director of that activity.
      • If a student is failing two courses (combination of any course) at the end of the marking period that student will be placed on academic probation and must attend assigned administrative study halls . Length, dates and times of study halls will be determined each marking period. The student must attend a specific number of study halls as determined by the administration to remain eligible for student activities that marking period. Non-compliance will result in removal from the activity.
      • It is the responsibility of the student to come to the study halls with work, preferably assignments from failing subjects. Students who arrive with no work will be sent home and will not receive credit for the study hall session. Failure to receive credit for the study hall sessions will result in removal from participation in student activities
      • To become eligible to participate in any student activity the next marking period the student must:
        • Have attended the prescribed number of study hall sessions the previous marking period.
        • Not be failing two courses at report card time.
      • If a student is failing three or more courses (any combination) at report card time that student is immediately ineligible the next marking period. The student must attend the prescribed study hall sessions if he/she wishes to participate in student activities the following marking period. Also, the student at the end of the marking period must not be failing more than one course to become eligible for student activities.
      • At the end of each marking period, those students who have failed two or more courses and are already on academic probation or ineligible will be ineligible for student activities the next marking period. This applies to those student who were involved in an activity that qualified them to be placed on the academic probation or ineligible list.
      • Students placed on academic probation or ineligibility are encouraged to participate in Project TEAM, a mentoring program for at-risk students.
  • First Marking Period
      • Administrative study halls will be available to any student who needs support academically. Any coach, advisor, director can recommend a student to the study halls if they feel there is a need for academic improvements.
      • At progress report time, any student who is failing two or more classes will be referred to participate in the academic study halls. This participation will be mandatory for all teams, club/organizations, etc. The students must attend the study halls to continue in the activity.
      • The first academic probation/eligibility check will occur when the 1st marking period grades are complete ( see I. a.)
  • If a student withdraws from a course and receives a withdraw fail this is the same as if they received a failing grade for the course.
  • Students who are ineligible are not permitted to practice with their team, club, group, organization, etc.
  • Credit requirements for handicapped/classified students shall follow NJSIAA 4.F(1)
  • All students participating in student activities must adhere to the 13.75 (semester rule) and the 27.5 (full year) credit requirements. Students who earn an F in one marking period in a course must earn at least a C- in the other marking period of the semester in order to obtain a passing average for the semester.
